A terrestrial layer consisting of a mixture of soil and often, plant litter.
Species associated with this layer are often ground active not often venturing into the sward/field layer above. These include a series of ground-active predators and seed hunters (such as ground beetles) who spend a large proportion of their time on the ground or within the top most layers of leaf litter.
