Cavities in the heartwood that contain nests of birds, mammals or other invertebrates.
The tree cavities may be used for nesting or roosting by birds and roosting by bats. They may also be occupied by Hornet or other social wasps. These create very different conditions and hence are exploited by a different and distinctive range of specialist invertebrates, including carrion species.
